Lab HW for Ch15 Ryan, a 29 y/o college student, presents to the clinic complaining of generalized fatigue over the past month and a worsening sore throat over the past three days. He is new to the clinic and reports that this happens to him just about every year, and that other physicians have told him that he is stressed out. His review of symptoms is notable for frequent sneezing, post-nasal drip, eye watering, and an itch of his posterior pharynx. These symptoms tend to be worse in the spring and summer and have been bothering him since mid-April. His past medical history is remarkable only for mild asthma induced by being outdoors. He takes no regular medications. He denies tobacco, ethanol, or illicit substance use. The physician ordered "rapid strep test". (1) Please describe briefly how to collect throat specimen for a rapid strep test. (2) Ryan's rapid strep test is negative. Knowing the rapid strep test can give negative results even when strep bacteria are present, the physician recommended doing a throat culture to confirm that Ryan does not have strep throat. Ryan does not think a throat culture is necessary since his rapid strep test is negative. What should you say to convince him to follow the doctor's orders? Hint: complications of a strep infection are more dangerous than strep throat. Rapid Strep Test has a sensitivity (ability to correctly detect people with the disease) of 86% and a specificity (ability to correctly identify people who do not have the disease) of 95%. (3) Ryan's Strep culture on blood agar turns out positive for Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A streptococcus). What is the hemolytic pattern of this bacteria on blood agar? Ryan's lab report also stated that " a gram-positive, nonmotile, nonsporeforming coccus that occurs in chains or in pairs of cells in gram staining" Can you make a sketch of these bacteria below to fit the above description? What is the color? Why? Activate Windows
