Vitality refers to the experience of having energy available toone’s self. Vital employees are full of positive energy when theywork, and feel mentally and physically strong. Such employees oftenshow higher job performance and lower stress than their less vitalcolleagues. Despite the importance of vitality, few publicadministration studies have studied vitality. More generally, byfocusing on vitality, we aim to bring a “positive psychology”perspective into the domain of public administration. We analyzewhether two important job characteristics (leader’s taskcommunication and job autonomy) affect vitality. We use amulti-method design. A large-scale survey (N = 1,502) shows thatleader’s task communication and job autonomy are positively relatedto vitality. A lab experiment (N = 102) replicated these findings, showing cause-and-effect relationships. In conclusion, publicorganizations can potentially increase employee vitality (a) byincreased task communication from leaders and (b) by providingemployees with greater job autonomy. Employees who show highvitality at work have a high level of activation and positiveenergy, and often have higher job performance than their less vitalcolleagues. However, few studies within public administrationexamine vitality, looking more often at for instance jobsatisfaction or commitment. This study analyzes how two importantwork characteristics (leadership communication and autonomy)influence employee vitality. A multi-method design was used: asurvey of 1,502 public healthcare employees and a lab experiment of102 participants. Hence, this study answers to calls within publicadministration for 1) more multi-method designs and 2) increaseduse of experiments. In the survey and the experiment, bothleadership communication and work autonomy have a positive effecton vitality (significant direct effects). The interaction effect ofleadership communication and autonomy was weak (survey) orinsignificant (lab experiment). Concluding, employee vitality canbe strengthened by increased leadership communication and grantingmore autonomy to employees.
